Stowe vehicle crash involving juvenile pedestrian under investigation, police say

A 6-year-old pedestrian sustained serious non-life threatening injuries in Stowe, according to police. Nicholas Chegwidden, 42, was driving the vehicle involved.

Vermont State Police say a vehicle struck a 6-year-old pedestrian on Mountain Road in Stowe on March 30, 2026, at approximately 5:58 PM. The operator of the vehicle, identified as 42-year-old Nicholas Chegwidden of Stowe, was traveling north when the child crossed the road in front of his Toyota Tacoma.

According to police reports, the collision resulted in serious, non-life-threatening injuries to the juvenile, who was subsequently transported to the UVM Medical Center for treatment. The vehicle sustained minor damage to its front bumper but no injuries were reported for Chegwidden. The Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is actively investigating the incident and was assisted by the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles Enforcement Division and the Stowe Police Department.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to reach out to Sgt. Tylor Rancourt at the Berlin Barracks. The investigation remains ongoing, and the circumstances surrounding the collision may evolve as new information comes to light.
