According to police reports, a 41-year-old Shaftsbury resident, James A. Salerno, was arrested on April 30, 2026, following a traffic stop on Forest Heights in Shaftsbury. Vermont State Police say they responded to a report of an intoxicated driver leaving a daycare and located Salerno’s vehicle shortly thereafter.

During the stop, officers noticed a young child in the back seat and observed several signs of impairment in Salerno. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Shaftsbury barracks. The child was safely returned to their home. Salerno has been charged with driving under the influence, reckless endangerment, and negligent operation.

Salerno is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court’s Bennington Criminal Division on May 18, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Police report that he was released with a criminal citation following the incident.
