According to police reports, an assault investigation is underway following a serious incident at the Newmont Slate Quarry in West Pawlet, Vermont. The incident occurred around 9:50 a.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2025, involving 54-year-old Mark Ray, a resident of West Pawlet. Ray was transported to Albany Medical Center in New York, where he succumbed to his injuries on November 12, 2025.
The Vermont State Police say an autopsy confirmed that Ray died from pneumonia and severe traumatic brain injury due to assault, ruling the manner of death a homicide. As of now, no individuals are in custody in connection with this case.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Rutland Barracks at 802-773-9101 or submit a tip anonymously online. Police stress that the charges are allegations as the inquiry continues, and further updates will be provided as details develop. Court dates and potential charges may change as the case progresses.
