Burlington police investigate inmate death at University of Vermont Medical Center

According to police, a death investigation is underway in Burlington, VT, following the passing of inmate Jose Gonzalez, 51, at the UVM Medical Center.

According to police reports, the Vermont State Police are conducting an investigation into the death of a 51-year-old man who was in custody at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility. Jose Gonzalez, a resident of Connecticut, was pronounced dead on March 27, 2026, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.

Police say that staff from the Department of Corrections notified them around 12:10 p.m. on the day of his death. Gonzalez had been hospitalized since February 27 due to a health issue, initially receiving treatment at Rutland Regional Medical Center before being transferred to UVMMC on March 1, where he remained until his passing.

According to the report, the circumstances surrounding Gonzalez’s death do not appear to be suspicious. An autopsy will be conducted by the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office to ascertain the cause and manner of death. Records indicate that Gonzalez had been incarcerated since November 2025.
