Barton man arrested for violating protection order, police

Vermont State Police say a 26-year-old Lyndonville resident, Wyatt Gilman, was charged with multiple offenses following an incident at a residence on Cook Road in Barton late on July 19. Police were initially called to serve Gilman a temporary abuse prevention order, which required him to leave the property.

According to police reports, shortly after the order was served, officers were alerted that Gilman had returned to the residence. When troopers attempted to contact him, he briefly fled before barricading himself inside. During this time, authorities learned he had made threats against law enforcement and may have had access to a firearm.

A significant response ensued, involving various specialized units and local police. At approximately 2:15 a.m. on July 20, police used an unmanned aircraft to survey the residence. Gilman then attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended after a brief pursuit. He resisted arrest but was ultimately taken into custody without further incident.

Gilman was processed at the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks and later lodged at the Northern State Correctional Facility on a $5,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Orleans Court at 12:30 p.m. on July 20 to face charges including violating an abuse prevention order, unlawful trespass, and resisting arrest.
