Deputy injured by vehicle in South Hero; search for driver underway, police say

A deputy was struck and injured by a vehicle in South Hero, Vermont, according to police. The driver, preliminarily identified as Kevin Marx, fled the scene.

According to police reports, a Grand Isle County Sheriff’s deputy was injured after being struck by a vehicle on U.S. Route 2 in South Hero around 8:10 p.m. on Wednesday. The incident occurred while the deputy was returning to his cruiser following a traffic stop when the driver of the vehicle, identified as Kevin Marx, 36, of Grand Isle, allegedly turned his car around and hit the deputy, dragging him a considerable distance before stopping.

Emergency responders took approximately 30 minutes to extract the deputy, who was then transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. His injuries are reported to be serious, but his condition is stable. The police have not released his identity pending notification of family members.

The vehicle involved is a 2022 Subaru Forester, registered to Marx, who is described as approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 155 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. Multiple law enforcement agencies are actively searching for Marx, who fled the scene. The Vermont State Police’s Crash Reconstruction Team and Bureau of Criminal Investigations are leading the investigation.
