Vermont State Police say a crash on Interstate 91 Southbound in Norwich on January 25, 2026, involved two vehicles, including a Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) plow truck. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. and resulted in the complete destruction of one vehicle.
According to police reports, David Grudem, 82, of West Fairlee, was operating a 2021 Toyota Prius that collided with the rear of a 2024 Freightliner plow truck driven by 25-year-old Zachary Martin of East Thetford. Following the impact, Grudem’s vehicle caught fire, prompting the closure of both southbound lanes until approximately 5:15 p.m. First responders from multiple fire departments, along with the Vermont AOT and Duprey’s Towing, were involved in extinguishing the fire and clearing the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and Grudem is currently charged with reckless driving. The next court date has not been established, and charges may evolve as the case progresses.
