Vermont State Police say a two-vehicle collision occurred on US Route 5 in Derby on January 23, 2026, at approximately 5:23 PM. The incident happened near the Elks Lodge and involved an 83-year-old resident, Leonard Bent Jr., who was driving a 2015 Subaru Legacy.

According to police reports, Bent’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2022 GMC Canyon operated by 34-year-old Trevor Piper, also from Derby. Both drivers sustained minor injuries but did not require transportation to a medical facility. Bent has been charged with a civil violation for failure to maintain lane of travel, under Title 23 VSA 1038.

The Vermont State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The legal status of the charges will be determined in court, where dates and other details may evolve as the case progresses.
