Death investigation underway in Burlington involving inmate, police say

Burlington, VT – According to police, a death investigation is underway after Alexis Lesage, 28, died at the University of Vermont Medical Center while in custody.

Vermont State Police say they are investigating the death of a 28-year-old woman who was in custody at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. Alexis Lesage, a resident of South Burlington, was pronounced dead at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington at approximately 8:10 p.m. on January 17, 2026.

According to police reports, authorities were notified of Lesage’s death after she experienced a medical event at the correctional facility on January 14. She was subsequently transported to the hospital, where her condition deteriorated over the following days. Initial findings suggest that her death does not appear to be suspicious; however, an autopsy is scheduled at the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death.

Lesage, also known by the name Alexis Poulin, had been incarcerated since December 2022. Police indicate that further inquiries should be directed to the Department of Corrections, as additional details remain unavailable at this time.
