Vermont State Police say a 40-year-old man from Marblehead, Massachusetts, was arrested early December 1 in Newark after reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis at a relative’s home. Police responded to a residence on Newark Street, where they found James O’Meara exhibiting aggressive behavior, including damaging property.
According to the report, O’Meara emerged from the home and threatened officers while wielding an axe and a running chainsaw. Following protocol, troopers maintained a safe distance as he retreated back inside the residence. Later, O’Meara was taken into custody without further incident. He faces three counts of Attempted Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Criminal Threatening.
O’Meara was processed at the St. Johnsbury barracks and is currently being held at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility without bail. He is scheduled to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court – Criminal Division on December 2 at 12:30 PM. The charges are allegations, and the court date may change as the case progresses.
