Searsburg man dies in fatal crash on Vermont Route 9, police say

In Searsburg, Vermont, a head-on collision on Route 9 resulted in the death of 53-year-old Alan Vautrain, according to police. The investigation is ongoing.

Vermont State Police say a fatal two-vehicle crash occurred on Vermont Route 9 in Searsburg on April 22 at approximately 10:53 a.m. The incident involved a 53-year-old man from Ludlow, Massachusetts, and a 72-year-old Wilmington resident.

According to police reports, Alan Vautrain, the driver of a 2017 Toyota Rav-4, was traveling east when he reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic. Robert Ruhl, operating a 2025 Lexus RX, attempted to evade the collision by swerving into another lane. Vautrain also tried to maneuver back into his lane just before the vehicles collided head-on. Vautrain was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ruhl sustained minor injuries and was transported to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center for treatment.

The Vermont State Police, along with the Wilmington Fire Department, Deerfield Valley Rescue, and Walt’s Towing, responded to the scene. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and authorities encourage any witnesses to reach out to Trooper Stevens at the Shaftsbury Barracks.
