Vermont State Police say a 32-year-old Londonderry man was arrested early Tuesday morning for attempting to burglarize a home on White Creek Road in Shaftsbury. According to police reports, Robert T. Metcalfe was taken into custody shortly after officers were dispatched to the scene around 5:47 a.m.
Police allege that Metcalfe had stolen a vehicle in Hoosick Falls, New York, earlier that night and abandoned it on railroad tracks in Shaftsbury before attempting to enter the residence. Upon his arrest, Metcalfe reportedly attempted to seize a trooper’s firearm while at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, which led to further charges.
Metcalfe faces multiple allegations, including attempted burglary, unlawful trespass, unlawful mischief, receiving stolen property, and impeding public officers. He was held at the Marble Valley Correctional Center on a $10,000 bail and is scheduled for arraignment in the Vermont Superior Court, Bennington Criminal Division, on April 20, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. According to the report, the charges are allegations, and court dates may change as the case develops.
