Montpelier truck crash on I89 causes travel delays, police say

According to police reports, a single-vehicle crash occurred on March 22, 2026, around 9:12 AM on Interstate 89 near mile marker 52 in Montpelier. The incident involved a 2024 Freightliner tractor trailer operated by 49-year-old Ashokkumar GodadBhai Menat from Union City, California.

Police say Menat lost control of the truck while driving northbound, likely due to slushy and icy road conditions caused by snow. The vehicle veered off the right side of the road, colliding with a large sign before jackknifing and becoming lodged on a guardrail. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the incident, although the tractor trailer sustained minor damage to its front end and undercarriage.

The crash prompted assistance from the Berlin Fire Department, Vermont Trans, and LaRoche Towing & Recovery. Investigators noted significant travel delays in the area, as one lane of the roadway was reduced and a small section of I-89 was temporarily closed to facilitate the removal of the vehicle.

The legal status of the incident remains under review, and no charges have been reported. Changes to the case and any potential court dates may arise as the investigation continues.
