Vermont State Police say a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 in Brookfield early on February 26 resulted in the arrest of a 46-year-old Barre City man. Nicholas Lawliss was reportedly driving north when his Subaru Outback slid off the road and overturned.

According to police reports, responding troopers discovered that Lawliss was operating his vehicle with a criminally suspended license and in violation of his conditions of release. Passengers in the vehicle included 40-year-old Matthew Barnett of Marshfield, who was also not wearing a seatbelt. Both individuals sustained suspected minor injuries and were taken to Gifford Medical Center for evaluation. The Subaru was deemed totaled due to the damage sustained in the accident.

Lawliss was taken into custody and later arraigned at Vermont Superior Court, Orange Criminal Division, on the same day at 3:00 PM. He faces charges including negligent operation and two violations of conditions of release. These charges are allegations and the court date is subject to change as the case progresses.
